I used to use Emacs on real hardware terminals and generally the modeline was in verse video. I think that looks better.

A reversed modeline sounds much easier to distinguish.
One of the terminals we had at our computer club was the classic ADM3A. We also had a variety of other terminals, most of them phosphorous green. Good times. 🙂
